Holiday Laptop Donation Drive with HP kicks off Dec. 1

In partnership with HP Inc., San José Public Library, and the Library Foundation are hosting a donation drive to refresh and repurpose used Windows laptops. Your donations will provide more students, families, and other Library program participants with access to the technology they need to thrive.

As we approach the holiday season, if you're thinking of upgrading your devices, please consider paying it forward by dropping off your used device between December 1, 2020 and January 30, 2021. You will receive an acknowledgement receipt for your gift-in-kind tax-deductible donation.

Donations can be made at any of our Express Pickup locations, Tuesday – Saturday from 2:00 – 6:00 PM. Please, do not drop off donations at the Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Library.

NOTE: Windows-equipped laptops or tablets are preferred. We cannot repurpose Apple devices. Don't forget to include any power cords and other device accessories!

Will the refurbished laptops be donated to schools who will then decide which families receive laptops, or will SJPL donate laptops directly to families who meet certain qualifications? My son is currently borrowing a laptop from his school in order to participate in online learning, but if he is able to receive a laptop he can keep I'd like to find out how.

Laptops that are able to be refreshed by HP volunteers will be distributed first to people enrolled in SJPL’s ongoing skill building programs such as Career Online High School, Partners in Reading, Adult ESL programming, and Immigration programs, but who have been unable to complete their programs virtually because they don’t have a computer. At this time, it does not appear that there will be any additional devices remaining. If additional computers are available, SJPL will open a first-come first-served list for distribution.

Will the laptop drive be cleaned by the SJLP (or HP) staff or should I clean the drive?

Thanks.

Your Comment
Hello,

Donated laptop drives will be cleaned by our HP volunteer partners. If you would like to clean your own drive prior to your donation, you may do so. HP volunteers will still review all laptop drives for cleaning, whether cleared prior to donation or not.

Thank you.

Hi,

I have a few laptops, but they are having some issues (need some hardware fix).
Fixing hardware will cost some $, but they are easily fixable. I grab them from my old work for my personal work.

I am not sure if I can drop not working ones, please let me know.

Thanks,
Arvind

Your Comment
Hello,

We highly encourage the donation of working laptops but will still accept all donations. We ask that you please provide a description of the laptop upon donation, which could include any functional issues. Our HP volunteers can possibly address hardware issues on HP laptops but are not able to fix other brands.

Thank you.

My name is Christine Tran. My son is 10 and in grade 5 right now. He borrowed his school computer but I see that it is too small. When I heard about this I was willing to get a larger computer. How do I sign up for this? Thank you very much and Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Your Comment
Hello,
Once we have a better understanding of the number of laptops that we will receive, we will be able to provide more information to the community on how these devices will be distributed.
Thank you.

Are there any minimum specs for the laptop hardware? Thank you.

Your Comment
Hello,
We have confidence that laptops between 1 - 4 years old can be refurbished into Chromebooks. We will accept older equipment, but older equipment may not be refurbished as a Chromebook. Ideally, the laptop would have a working camera and speakers in order to accommodate video conferencing and distance learning.
Thank you.

Hello,
I have a working window laptop but the power cord is not from the original manufacture that comes with the laptop. Do you still take them?

Thank you

Your Comment
Hello,
We encourage the donation of working laptops with their power cords, but we will accept all donations. If the power cord that you are going to be donating is the one you currently use with the laptop, and it properly charges the laptop, we will gladly accept the power cord in question.
Thank you.

Hello,
We encourage the donation of working laptops 1-4 years old. There are certain fixes we may be able to make on HP models with help from our HP volunteers, but other brands we are not able to fix. We will accept all donations, but please be certain at the time of donation to note the current condition of the laptop - brand, working/not working. etc. It is likely that non-HP brand laptops with missing components will not be able to be refurbished into chromebooks.
Thank you.

I donated 2 laptops earlier today at the Almaden branch. I scanned the QR code on the table but Survey Monkey said it can't find the page.

Your Comment
Hello,
We are sorry to hear that the QR code did not work for you. On the flyer there should have been a link present in addition to the QR code in the situation that the QR did not work properly. That link is bit.ly/sjpldonation and it could have been that there was technical error with the surveymonkey website at that time.
Thank you.

A Gift in Kind letter will be sent to all donors using the method they note on their donation slip. Letters will be sent either to a donor's email address or to their mailing address depending on which information they include in their donation slip at the time of donation.
