Literacy Services

Partners in Reading logoSan Jose Public Library Awarded 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library ServicePartners in Reading (PAR) offers adult literacy services to residents in the City of San José through the San José Public Library. Services are concentrated in these areas:

  • Adult Literacy enables English-speaking adults and their families to improve their basic literacy skills so they can achieve their goals and function more effectively.

  • Families for Literacy (FFL) provides opportunities for adult literacy learners and their young children to learn together while having fun.  FFL enhances the parent’s role as the child’s first teacher through storytelling and quality books.

  • Workplace Literacy is a program delivered at job sites for employees who wish to improve their English as a Second Language and literacy skills. Through participation, workers enhance their job skills and performance to improve employment prospects while businesses realize increased productivity and efficiency.

  • English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are available in collaboration with community partners. Adults with limited English proficiency participate in classes to improve their speaking skills and ability to communicate more effectively.

Did You Know?

About 16% of American adults function at the lowest level of literacy.

In San José, that means over 153,000 adults lack the basic skills to read the directions on a medicine bottle, find an intersection on a map, or fill out a job application.
