  • Hispanic YA Literature Before We Were Free Cover

September 15, 2015 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, so it’s a good time to dive into some Young Adult Literature written by Hispanic authors and also highlighting Hispanic characters. I didn’t read any YA literature written by Hispanic authors until I was in college and I remember being so bummed when I final did read some because I couldn’t help but think how great it would have been if I had read these when I was a teen. The stories mirrored so many of my own experiences and it also shed light on other issues that I never even knew existed. Why is it so important to read books with such diverse characters? Watch what some YA authors have to say below:

  • Study Tips For College Freshmen!Study SJPL

The biggest challenge for me in college was learning to manage my time and learning how to study. In high school I was able to get away without really studying or with cramming everything the night before. I never realized the importance of studying until I entered my freshman year and I started falling behind on assignments thanks to my bad study habits. Thankfully, I have a younger sister (she's the favorite plus she's studying to be a doctor) who has excellent study skills and has taught me some tricks of the trade. Building good study skills early on will not only get you better grades, but it will establish good working habits in the future.

  • Zombies on a Plane!?Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead

Remember the movie released back in 2006 called Snakes on a Plane starring Samuel L. Jackson? No? Then let me proceed to tell you how traumatic, yet brilliant, that movie was and how horrifying a situation like that might be if it was true. Imagine yourself sitting on a flight and counting down the number hours until you land. Now imagine the same flight planted with hundreds of venomous snakes slithering their way through pipes, your luggage, and ready to attack if provoked even by the smallest sound or movement.
