No, your Overdrive account is based on an internal user number that is different from your library card number. In most cases, you will not lose access to any books that are currently checked out, your current holds, or your reading history. As a precaution, you can take a screenshot of your current place in line, opens a new window or export your history, opens a new window before changing your library card number.

Once you have your new library card number, you should use it to log in to Overdrive. If you use Libby, you will need to verify your card and input your new card number.

If you have questions about this process, please contact eResources Support.

Here are a few methods to solve this issue:

Change your default Kindle to your new device.

      1. Go to www.amazon.com and sign into your account.
      2. Mouse over the "Accounts & Lists" menu and choose "Content & Devices.
      3. Once you're in "Content & Devices", you'll see four tabs across the top of the screen, Select "Devices."
      4. You will see a section for your "Amazon devices" and another for "Amazon apps installed on devices". Select the image for "Amazon devices."
      5. It will give you images of all devices you have connected.
      6. Under one of them, with blue lettering will be the words "Default device". If you want to make the new Kindle the default device, select the image of that new Kindle.
      7. It will open a page with three grey text boxes on the right side. Select "Set as default device."
      8. When the confirmation window pops up, select "Save".
      9. Now, when you send items to your Kindle from OverDrive, they will automatically go to your new device.

Choose a different Kindle when you check out your book.

If you don't want to change your default device, you can just choose a different device when you collect your OverDrive book.

      1. After you have checked the book out and have been redirected to Amazon to "Get Library Book", look under the yellow button and choose a different device
      2. Select "Deliver" when you've made the selection.
    •

Download book from your Kindle Library.

      1. If you have sent your Kindle book to the wrong device, you can still read it by going to your Kindle Library on the Kindle you prefer and tapping on the cover
      2. The book should download to your device.
      3. If you don't see it in your library, select the "Sync" button to force your Kindle to check for library updates.
        • Make sure that you are connected to Wi-Fi.

One of the benefits of using eBooks, eAudiobooks, and digital media from the San José Public Library is that they do not need to be returned like physical items do. They will automatically check themselves back in at the end of the loan period with no action needed on your part.

If you are interested in returning your eBook or other digital media item so that other borrowers may use it, first identify which platform you checked your item out from (Overdrive, Boundless, hoopla, etc.). Next, follow the corresponding link below to read the most up-to-date instructions from the platform's help files.

For links labeled as FAQs, please scroll to the given question for the latest return instructions.

Quick Links to Return Instructions by Platform

    • Boundless
    • Cloud Library FAQs: "Can I return an eBook early?"
    • Libby
    • Overdrive
    • Hoopla: Even though there are no holds for hoopla items, you can still return the item early if you choose. Unfortunately, this will not provide you with additional Hoopla check outs each month.
      • In the Hoopla app, tap on My Hoopla at the bottom of the touchscreen, then tap on the item you wish to return, scroll to the bottom and select "Return Now."
      • In a web browser, log into your Hoopla account and click on My hoopla at the top of the screen, click on Currently Borrowed from the drop down menu, click on the item you want to return and then in the pop-up window that appears, select "Return Now."

As of 2023, OverDrive has been retiring the OverDrive app and this has resulted in limited availability. OverDrive suggests that users switch to Libby.

    Mobile app

The OverDrive app can be installed only in select countries from Google Play (on Chromebooks and Android 5.0+), the Apple App Store (on iOS 12+), the Microsoft Store (on Windows 8.1 or higher), or the Amazon Appstore (on FireOS 5+).

In other countries, if you already installed the OverDrive app on a Fire tablet, you're welcome to keep using it.

If you can't use the OverDrive app, we recommend trying Libby.

    Desktop software

As of February 23, 2022, OverDrive's desktop software for audiobooks is no longer available to install.

As an alternative, you can borrow and listen to audiobooks using Libby or SJPL's OverDrive website.

There are a few different choices you have to make about Boundless (Formerly Axis 360) eBooks depending on how you checked them out.

    • Via Library Catalog: If you checked out through the library catalog:
      • When you check out through the library catalog, you are given a choice of two different formats to download. You should consider a couple of things before you choose. Are you going to be reading on a mobile device, or on a computer? Below we have broken down the choices:
        • EPUB - can ONLY be read using an eReader like Adobe Digital Editions or the Bluefire reader. This is how you would read if you are planning to open the book on a laptop or desktop computer.
        • Boundless - can ONLY be read using the Boundless app on a mobile device.
    • Via Boundless Website: If you checked out through the Boundless website in a browser:
      • You will have a chance to download the eBook when you check it out, but you should, again, consider where you are going to read.  If you plan to read on the computer on which you checked out the book, go ahead and download at the time of check out.  If you plan to read using the Boundless app, wait to download until you have the app open, and download from there.
    • Via the Boundless App: If you checked out through the Boundless app on a mobile device:
      • If you plan to read in the app, go ahead and download at the time of check out.  If you plan to read on a different device or on a computer, wait to download until you get to that computer or device.

For questions or additional help, please feel free to contact us through our email form or call 408-808-2104 if you need help or have questions.

cloudLibrary is an eBook Lucky Day collection.  What that means is that we don't allow holds on the items there -- you just stumble upon them -- you're lucky! The loan period on eBooks from cloudLibrary is 7 days, and the loan limit is 2 items at a time. For more information, check out this blog entry.

If a title you are interesting in is not available, you can see when it will be available and add it to your Save For Later shelf. Here is an example*:

*Image text reads: The Atlas Complex by Olivie Blake. Available in 7 Days. Save for Later. Preview.

Please note: The title you are looking for could be returned early and checked out by another library user. This could extend the estimated availability date originally displayed.

Knowing how to check out eBooks and how long you get to keep them can be confusing!

    eMagazines from BookanFlipster, and PressReader:

      • No limits. You don't have to return these, and there is no limit on how many you can check out.

    eBooks from Gale and Biblioboard:

      • No limits. All of these are streaming, which means that you don't check them out and you generally don't download them.

eMedia (eMagazines, eBooks and eAudiobooks) from OverDrive, Boundless and EBSCO eBooks:

      • 3 week loan period, 10 max items, renewals allowed
      • These work very much like physical books from the library.  You check them out and are able to keep them for three weeks. Renewals are allowed as long as no one else has the items on hold. The big difference between these and regular books is that you don't have to return them if you don't want to -- they will return on their own when the loan period is over. There are no fines on electronic materials!

    eBooks from cloudLibrary:

      • 1 week loan period; 2 max items, no renewals
      • cloudLibrary works similarly to the above mentioned eMedia items in how you check them out and return them, however their borrowing limits are more like our Lucky Day items in the libraries. In order to help bring the content you want to you faster, these items cannot be placed on hold and have quicker turn around. This way you may be able to get the eBook you want to read faster than waiting in line for the next eBook to be available!

    eMedia from hoopla :

      • Each card holder gets 6 total checkouts per month. eBooks, eAudiobooks, and eComics go out for 3 weeks. eMusic goes out for 7 days. eMovies & eTelevision goes out for 3 days
      • hoopla is currently the only eResource where you can get electronic movies and music!
      • We limit each user to six items per month because hoopla works on a pay-per-use model. When a user checks out an item, the library is charged for that item. This is an exciting model, because it means that we are only charged for what people use! It also means that, as more and more people use hoopla, the price to the library goes up. We limit to six items per month so that everyone gets a chance to check out and enjoy the materials hoopla offers and we don't go over our budget for that resource.

Did you get a new library card?

LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com) is one of the few eResources we have that requires extra effort when you change your library card number.

When you log in with a new library card, LinkedIn Learning checks our system to make sure that your account is active in our system, but does not associate that record with your old card. That means that it creates a new account for your new card. That isn't really a problem if you haven't done much work, but it can be a problem if you have. If you change your library card, it is recommended you save all the work you have done on LinkedIn Learning prior to making that switch.

    Using the Libby App:

Go to Menu Menu > Settings > Change Download Rules to update your download settings. You can choose whether book and audiobook loans download automatically after you borrow them, and whether they download when you're not on Wi-Fi.

These settings don't apply to magazines. Magazines are never automatically downloaded.

Note: These settings aren't available for libbyapp.com users.

    Download settings

The download settings control whether titles are downloaded automatically right after you borrow them. You can choose EverythingTitles Under..., or Nothing.

Choose Titles Under... to automatically download smaller titles (usually books) but exclude larger ones (like graphic novels and audiobooks).

Tap the underlined 20 MB to adjust the title size you'd like automatically downloaded. Most books are under 20 MB, many graphic novels are more than 100 MB, and most audiobooks are more than 300 MB.

    "Download Only On Wi-Fi" setting

The "Download Only On Wi-Fi" setting prevents loans and magazines from downloading on a cellular data connection.

To remove it from your device, tap and hold the cover, then choose “remove from device” from the menu.

If you checked out an eBook in the Kindle format, you can also remove it from your Amazon account by going to the “Your Content” tab on the "Manage Your Contents & Devices" page.

eBooks and eAudiobooks are returned automatically at the end of the lending period. If you wish to return a title early, most library eBook vendors allow early returns.

If you have not yet downloaded the eBook or eAudiobook, look for a “return” button near the title in your account.

If you have downloaded the title, you will need to return it through the vendor’s app. This is usually done by tapping or holding the book cover, then choosing “return.”

Although you log into Boundless (Formerly Axis 360) using your library card number and a PIN, Boundless doesn't actually communicate with the library system to verify that information. That means that, when you change your library card number or PIN in the library system, your information doesn't change at Boundless. If you try to log in with your old numbers (or you type your login information incorrectly) Boundless just prompts you to create a new account.

The end result is that you have TWO accounts -- one of them has your materials checked out and on hold, the other doesn't.

There are two solutions to this problem. You can contact the San Jose Public Library so that we can merge your two accounts, or you can just use your old card number and PIN, and regard them as a username and password.

If you do contact us about it, please provide your old library card number (if you still know it) and your new number. We will also need your name and email address. If you don't know your old number, it's ok -- we can search for you another way. Having it makes it easier, though.

Most vendors allow renewals if no one else is waiting for a particular title. If renewals are allowed, a renewal button will appear a few days before the end of the loan period. You also have the option to check out the eBook/eAudiobook immediately after it expires if no one else is waiting.

Related Page: eBooks/eMedia: Stream & Download

You may have to place a hold on an eBook or eAudiobook to be put on the waiting list.

Some publishers and vendors of eBooks/eAudiobooks require libraries to lend a single copy of the book at a time to one customer at time. You may need to place a hold for eBooks/eAudiobooks from OverDrive and Boundless. Other vendors, like hoopla, provide some “always available” titles with no waiting.

Related Page: eBooks/eMedia: Stream & Download

When your hold is ready, you should receive an email with a link to check out the hold. Once on the vendor’s site, log in and look for your holds under “My Account” or “My Lists” or “My Titles,” depending on which vendor you are using. The title may have been automatically checked out to you, or you may need to check it out now.

There are times when an eBook or eAudiobook has become unavailable to us but has not yet been removed from the catalog. The catalog records are usually removed at a later date.

You may have seen the following error message on hoopla:

The collective daily borrow limit set by your library has been reached and will reset at midnight. Please browse and add titles to favorites so you can easily access them after midnight.

The message above has recently been one of the most common errors for hoopla users. Hoopla only charges the library for what people use, and the library has a daily allowance for these materials. Once the library’s daily allowance is reached, users receive the error message above. The library has a budget for hoopla that is divided into a daily budget. This budget can be hit early in the day and an error message will pop up when you attempt to check out something.

This collective daily limit is NOT related to your 6 monthly checkouts offered by San Jose Public Library. The collective daily limit will prevent checkouts even if you have additional individual checkouts available.

The best way to avoid this is by using hoopla as early in the morning as possible. The limit resets at midnight, so you can try again the next morning. If the limit has been reached, you can still put items into your favorites to check out at a later time.

Upgrade to a Full Access Card Today: Some eResources like Hoopla, Libby and Coursera require a Full Access Library card. Visit any SJPL location,, opens a new window to upgrade to a Full Access Card. Learn more at sjpl.org/membership, opens a new window.

    Monthly Check Out Limit:

San Jose Public Library allows for 6 item borrowed cumulatively for a month. The number of checkouts available may be subject to change. On the first of every month, your number resets.

The way hoopla works is that, when a user checks out an item, the library is charged for that item. This is an exciting model, because it means that we are only charged for what people use! It also means that, as more and more people use hoopla, the price to the library goes up. We limit to six items per month so that everyone gets a chance to check out and enjoy the materials Hoopla offers and we don't go over our budget for that resource.

Please note: Returning a title does not increase your borrow limit for the current month. Your borrow limit is a cumulative total for the month, and not a total you can have borrowed at any given time.

Your title is available for a set number of days regardless of when during the month your title has been borrowed

    Collective Daily Limit:

That message at Hoopla could mean any of the following:

    • You replaced your library card
    • Your library card is expired
    • You need to create a hoopla account
    • The library has hit it's collective daily limit

    You've Replaced Your Library Card:

If you replaced your library card, you will need to manually change it in Hoopla. Go to the Gear Icon (Settings) in the upper right corner and click on Library on the upper left side of the screen.  You will see your library card on this page. Erase the old number and put in the new one. Click on Save.

    Your Card is Expired:

If your library card is expired, you will need to go into your closest branch library to get it updated. You'll need to take your San Jose Public Library card and a picture ID with your current address on it to any of our library locations. If your ID doesn't have your current address, it's okay to bring a piece of mail that shows the address too. Updating your card is quick and easy -- all you have to do is verify that the contact information we have for you is accurate. Once it's done, you won't have to do it again for four years.

You Need to Create a Hoopla Account:

If you are using your barcode at Hoopla for the first time, you may need to create a new Hoopla account using an email address that you have not used at Hoopla with a card from another library system. Some patrons have experienced issues when trying to use a new library card with an existing Hoopla account.
