Mt. Pleasant’s 5-Year Anniversary

Celebrating 5 Years

The Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Library (Bridge Branch), opens a new window just celebrated five years of service to its community. San José Public Library (SJPL) worked in partnership with Mt. Pleasant Elementary School District (MPESD) to convert an unused building at Robert Sanders Elementary School into a library. On April 10, 2019, Mt. Pleasant opened as SJPL's first Bridge Branch.
 
A Bridge Branch Library provides library services to residents in neighborhoods where geographic barriers may limit access. By transforming a new or existing facility, such as a school's multipurpose building, into a functional public library; a safe place is created for students and every member of the community to read, learn, and explore.
 

What Is Available at Mt. Pleasant?

Something Extra for MPESD Students

Beginning in the Fall 2019 school year, all MPESD students received student library cards, opens a new window. These cards offer the following:
 
The Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Library (Bridge Branch) was the first location to implement SJPL’s student library card initiative, now offered via all branches offer in partnership with more than 22 participating school districts citywide.
 

How Are We Doing?

Pleasant Neighborhood Library.In 2023 alone, this Bridge Branch welcomed more than 2,300 visitors and hosted more than 70 programs, including storytimes, community events in partnership with the Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Association, holiday celebrations, regular class visits, and more—all for free.
 
On Fridays at 4:00 PM, Mt. Pleasant offers a regular family storytime, opens a new window. On Saturdays, you can enjoy our family board game hour, opens a new window. There have also been fun performances and programs, such as Happy Birds, Jungle James, giant bubble stations, a balloon lady, and even a one-of-a-kind insect program from a local partner.
 
Earlier this year, Mt. Pleasant offered a new kids cooking program, opens a new window. Local youth learned how to cook simple meals on their own. The program quickly proved popular within the community and regularly "sells out".
