Leaders x Libraries

We're happy to introduce District 8 Councilmember Domingo Candelas. Elected to the San José City Council in 2022, Councilmember Candelas represents District 8 neighborhoods which include Evergreen and Silver Creek Valley.

We're excited to have him participate in our Leaders x Libraries blog series to share what he loves most about libraries and how libraries have shaped his life while growing up.

Q. Do you have an SJPL Library Card?
A. Yes!

Q. Where did you get your first library card?
A. Evergreen Branch Library

Q. Do you prefer ebooks or physical books?
A. Physical

Q. What is your favorite book?
A. As a kid, my favorite books were the Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine. Most recently, Lighter: Let Go of the Past, Connect with the Present, and Expand the Future by Yung Pueblo, because of its deep inward reflections and sage wisdom.

Q. What are you currently reading or learning?
A. I’m a big fan of Shea Serrano. Currently, I’m reading Basketball (and Other Things).

Q. What does the library mean to you, and why do you think libraries are essential to society?
A. The library is a place to learn, relax and gather. Most importantly, libraries are a community space for everyone and a lifeline as well.

Q. How did the library shape your life while growing up?
A. It was always a treat to visit the library! I loved having my own library card and being able to scan my books on my own. Now, I enjoy taking my nephews and love to see their excitement. I have fond memories at the library and I’m happy to create new ones with my family!

Q. Why is it important for everyone to exercise their right to library?
A. The library is a lot more than books! They offer a wide variety of services that allow everyone to engage!
