Books Into Movies 2023

Each year brings in new movies based on books, and 2023 is no exception. Whether you choose to view the movies at a movie theater or via streaming services, there will be a multitude of new releases from across the genres. And, if you're like me, you'll probably read the book before seeing the movie. Yes, that can seem like a giant SPOILER ALERT, but screenwriters and directors can (and have) made creative changes when bringing the written word to the big screen.

Some of these changes are wildly successful and considered art amongst film aficionados. Stanley Kubrick's interpretation of the Stephen King novel The Shining comes to mind. Other changes are not quite so successful, especially for those who have a deep love of the original source material, for example the new interpretation of Anne Rice's Interview With The Vampire. No matter what your opinion may be in regards to movies based on thing is certain. San Jose Public Library is your go-to place for reading the book before it hits the Big Screen!

The Color Purple, book cover

The Color Purple

A powerful cultural touchstone of modern American literature, The Color Purple depicts the lives of African American women in early twentieth-century rural Georgia. Separated as girls, sisters Celie and Nettie sustain their loyalty to and hope in each other across time, distance and silence. Through a series of letters spanning twenty years, first from Celie to God, then the sisters to each other despite the unknown, the novel draws readers into its rich and memorable portrayals of Celie, Nettie, Shug Avery and Sofia and their experience. The Color Purple broke the silence around domestic and sexual abuse, narrating the lives of women through their pain and struggle, companionship and growth, resilience and bravery.
