  • Cooking Gone Awry: Sweet Potato Piesweet potato pie

Remembering Thanksgiving Every year my Mom would make sweet potato pie for Thanksgiving. This southern dish was a rare treat during the holidays since we didn’t usually have desserts in the house. It’s always the first of the leftovers to disappear. But one year when I was a teenager, the sweet potato pie tasted funny. Everyone at the table took only one bite of their slice of pie. Turns out she accidentally put baking soda in the pie filling throwing off the taste of the pie. FYI baking soda is not an ingredient used to make sweet potato pie. All week, family members double-dared each other to eat it. The pie sat uneaten until it spoiled.
