It’s National Library Week!

Smiling staff.

Founded by the American Library Association in 1958, we celebrate National Library Week every April. National Library Week 2023 is April 23 – 29 and this year’s theme is “There’s More to the Story.” San Jose Public Library offers a myriad of stories in print, video, electronic, audio and other formats, but the library also offers community members so much more, including free state park passes, museum passes, educational programs and events for all ages, meeting spaces, volunteer opportunities, and access to hotspots, iPads, Chromebooks, and laptops.

During the week, we will also observe the following specific celebration days:

Monday, April 24: Right to Read Day
2023 marks the inaugural Right to Read Day. In the past few years, the American Library Association has tracked more challenges to books in schools and libraries than at any other time since it starting keeping track over 20 years ago. Now is the time to stand up for the right to read!

Tuesday, April 25: National Library Workers Day
Libraries wouldn’t work without the staff members who work in them. This is a special day to show appreciation for all that they do.

Wednesday, April 26: National Library Outreach Day
This is a day to celebrate and recognize the ways library staff get out of their buildings to meet community members where they are, whether it be through the Maker[Space]ship's routes, school visits, or community events.

Thursday, April 27: Take Action for Libraries Day
Libraries are essential resources in our democracy, and this is a day to remind community leaders and legislators of the importance of funding and support for them.
