Every Spring I have the urge to clear off a space on some land, dig my hands into the Earth, and plant some flowers and small vegetable plants. Unfortunately, I live in a small apartment and don't have a piece of land to call my own (at least not yet). I do have a lovely little balcony area just outside my kitchen which is perfect for container gardening. Last year, I was able to grow a fine selection of flowers, Baby Pumpkins, peppers, and sunflowers. I also have a collection of California Succulents which are still going strong. I really love being able to sit outside on the balcony, surrounded by these beautiful plants and enjoy the fresh air while the sun sets in the distance.
Here at San Jose Public Library, we have a fine selection of books detailing the basics of container gardening and balcony gardening. If you have limited space, a terrarium or a bonsai tree might help with your indoor decor, all the while providing some quiet, calm, green energy in your home. The appearance of plants in your home environment can be very soothing and calming, especially when you are living in a small space, urban environment. Check out these recommended reads and get started on your new hobby!
