Educator of the Year

The San José Public Library is proud to honor outstanding educators who make a difference in our community.

As the City's department leading the City of San José’s Education Initiative, opens a new window, we deeply value the dedication and impact of teachers and educators. Their commitment to excellence in education helps students discover new possibilities and inspires a lifelong love of learning that extends far beyond the classroom.

We are proud to announce the launch of the San José Educator of the Year Award, which recognizes TK–12 grade teachers who have made a meaningful difference in their students’ lives.

Each awardee will be recognized with an official commendation from the San José City Council, celebrating their outstanding contributions. In addition, honorees will receive a $500 check, made possible through the generous support of the San José Public Library Foundation, opens a new window.

The San José Public Library and the San José Public Library Foundation thank you for being the cornerstone of our community's future.

Congratulations to this this year's winners!

"One thing I hope my students remember from my class are the 8 habits of highly effective people by Sean and Steven Covey. They are ingrained in my students and are lifelong skills.  I hope they carry the habits with them in their futures!"

Ashley Martin

Robert Sanders Elementary School

Mount Pleasant Elementary School District

One powerful lesson my students have taught me is to embrace the moment and find joy in the learning process. They've shown me that being yourself—regardless of what others think—is not only brave, but also inspiring. Their energy and authenticity constantly push me to do the same.

Erica Gil

Herbert Hoover Middle School

San Jose Unified School District

My students have taught me the beauty of resilience. Their humor, insight, and vulnerability remind me daily that young people are not just learning—they’re surviving, adapting, and growing through so much. They’ve shown me that there’s no “one way” to learn or succeed, and that every student brings a brilliance that might not always show up on paper.

Joan Coll Margarit

Gardner Elementary School

San José Unified School District

"Since childhood, I've been deeply involved in sports, particularly coaching basketball—just like my father, who was also a coach. That same drive to guide, support, and help others grow is what led me to envision a future in education. There’s no greater reward than witnessing a student’s growth, both in skill and confidence, and feeling the pride that comes from knowing you’ve made a difference."
