Vintage Fashion and Style

One of the things that I have researched and studied most of my life are the definitive fashion and style trends of each decade. I've been obsessed with it from the time I was a young girl and using a "Fashion Plates" kit that I received for Christmas, when I was a little girl back in the 1980s (Thanks Mom!). And I was sewing clothes for my dolls with fabric scraps left over from my Mom's sewing projects (again, Thanks Mom!). I took some costume and clothing design courses during my University years, and even worked in the local theater's costume shop, studying under the direction of designer Kathryn Rohe. The skills I learned from these experiences led me into taking part in living history events, Renaissance Faires, Shakespearean Festivals, and designing and sewing for my own dance performances here in the Bay Area. Designing and making clothing and costumes is one of my favorite things to do in my spare time.

I've recently been attending more events and enjoy dressing up for them. Just a few weeks ago I attended the Spirit of '45 Event at the History Park here in San Jose. This event commemorates the end of World War 2, and features music, dance, a fashion show, and the honoring of veterans, as well as the Rosies (the women who worked in the factories during the War, "Rosie the Riveter"). While the dress I personally wore was more of a modern take on the 1950s pinup girl style, I definitely appreciate the designs of the 1940s for men and women. The clothing is well tailored and very flattering, and a bit more stylish and debonair than contemporary fashion styles.

Final Thoughts:

  1. My favorite time period for clothing is the 1940s-1950s.
  2.  I tend to dress in long floral dresses for work, and almost always have a flower clipped into my hair.
  3. I love seeing people express their own unique styles with clothing, hair, and makeup. And also have the freedom to change things up a bit.
  4. You've got one life. So, live it and enjoy it!
  5. I highly recommend checking out the Spirit of '45 event, which is usually held in mid-August at the History Park here in San Jose!
