Seed Libraries at SJPL
San José Public Library will have its Tenth Seed Library at Cambrian Library.
Wonder what a Seed Library is? Please see the description from our website below:
"San José Public Library's Seed Libraries offer seeds to the public for free. Seed libraries were created in response to a growing need in the community for locally adapted seeds. Seed libraries also help with climate change, loss of seed integrity, and to preserve genetic diversity.
You can help our community build a sustainable food network. Visit one of our seed libraries: Take, donate, and return seeds."
You do not need to have a library card in order to use this resource! We do welcome any suggestions and comments.
Helping out fellow gardeners is welcome through small or large (please call us to let us know if it is large) donations. A great time to set aside seeds to share would be harvest time!
Cambrian Library's Seed Library
Cambrian Library's Seed Library began like many programs at the Libraries: the germination of an idea!
Cambrian Library has two Suggestion Boxes for people to write requests anonymously. One common suggestion is "More books!"
Recently, because of the growing number of Seed Libraries at other Libraries, one request started to become more common: "Seed Library!" In addition, customers also began telling Staff that they would like Cambrian Library to have a See Library.
According to Librarian Kim Chu, who organized the program:
After the staff reviewed the different seed library structures out in the communities. We decided a system for the community for them to browse and donate. We also felt that it was important to include different categories of seeds so we included fruits, herbs, vegetables, and ornamental seeds.
A fun bonus feature of Cambrian Library's Seed Library includes a seed binder for people to look up planting info (lighting, plant depth, spacing, germination."
Volunteers Fund and Package the Seed Library
The Friends of the Cambrian Library (and every Friends Group at the different Libraries) generously fund our paid performers through their daily and semi-annual Book Sales.
The materials for the Book Sales come directly from your generous donations!
The Friends of the Cambrian Library accept, sort, and categorize your generous material donations for their different Book Sales. We are ever so grateful for their dedication and hard work.
The Friends funded this venture by funding the seeds in our initial allotment.
In addition, we owe thanks to volunteers Eunice and Emma, who meticulously packaged and sorted our seeds.
Cambrian Library is fortunate to have such a generous community!
