Thank You, Dads! Celebrate Father’s Day with SJPL

Father’s Day is just around the corner! This year, we’ll celebrate on Sunday, June 15. It’s the perfect occasion to honor the dads, grandfathers, stepdads, uncles, and all the father figures who make a difference in our lives. Whether you call him Dad, Pops, Papa, or something uniquely your own, Father’s Day is a time to show gratitude for the love, guidance, and support these special people provide every day.

A Father's Love by Hannah Holt explores the way fathers throughout the animal kingdom (and in snug houses) express love for their children in their own unique ways.

Happy Father's Day From the Crayons by Drew Daywalt is an inclusive celebration of all kinds of families celebrating dads and other family members on Father’s Day.

A Brief History of Father’s Day

The history of Father’s Day in the United States traces back to 1910 in Spokane, Washington, when Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by her own father’s devotion, proposed a day to honor fathers. The first celebration took place at the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Dodd’s father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and a single parent who raised six children on his own. Her efforts gained national attention, and after decades of advocacy, Father’s Day became a permanent national holiday in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.

Join Our Father's Day Craft Events

To help children celebrate the special men in their lives, several of our branch libraries will be hosting Father’s Day craft sessions in the days leading up to Father's Day. Kids are invited to drop in and create heartfelt gifts – like mugs, koozies, and windchimes – that dads and father figures will treasure for years to come. These creative activities offer a wonderful way for children to express their appreciation and make lasting memories. Join us for some hands-on fun! If you can’t make it to our library events, these books can help you create special gifts at home:

Honoring Fathers

As we approach Father’s Day, let’s take a moment to recognize the many ways fathers and father figures enrich our families and communities. Whether through quiet support, shared adventures, or simply being present, their influence is felt in countless ways. We look forward to celebrating with you at the library and wish a joyful Father’s Day to all those who nurture, guide, and inspire the next generation.
