Women’s History Month is a time to honor the women whose stories, leadership, and creativity have shaped our world and the San José Public Library, opens a new window. Meet some of the powerful volunteer voices.
Volunteering at the library during this month is a meaningful way to celebrate that legacy by supporting a space where learning, empowerment, and community connection thrive for everyone.
Meet Sanvi
We have Sanvi, A high school student who loves helping others and speaking about mental health. She remembers her first visit to the San José Public Library, opens a new window , where she felt truly welcomed and accepted and an experience that meant a lot to her and her younger brother. In her free time, she enjoys art and makes craft books, selling them to raise money for charity. Sanvi believes mental health really matters, especially today when she sees so many of her peers glued to their phones and social media. She values real-life connections and believes that the more you get to know people, the more you learn to see them for who they truly are. Volunteering at the San Jose Public Library allows her to learn more about others and broaden her perspective of the world. We interviewed her and she said,
"Women’s History Month to me means recognizing and honoring all the women who have fought for us to be where we are today. Because of their efforts, we can have many of the rights and privileges we have today."
Tell me a little bit about yourself:
My name is Sanvi and I’m a 9th grader in high school. I enjoy running and I’m really interested in my humanities classes. I also care a lot about volunteering and helping others. I believe that even small actions can make a difference in the community.
Name/ Branch you volunteer at/ how long you’ve been volunteering?
I volunteer at the King Library with the San José Public Library, mostly in TeenHQ. I recently started volunteering there, and everyone has been really welcoming. I’m excited to get more involved and attend events like the theater production on March 14.
What inspired you to start volunteering at the library? What keeps you coming back?
I wanted to volunteer because it’s a good way to give back to the community. Libraries are also safe and welcoming spaces, especially for students. I like helping create an environment where people feel comfortable learning and spending time.
What does Women’s History Month mean to you and how do you celebrate it?
Women’s History Month is about recognizing the women who fought for equal rights and opportunities. It’s also a time to learn about their contributions and remember that equality is important for everyone.
Can you share an experience at the library that was especially meaningful to you?
When I first volunteered at TeenHQ, everyone was really welcoming. It made me feel like I was part of a supportive community and that my help was appreciated.
What advice would you give to someone from the community who is thinking about volunteering or getting involved in their local library?
I would encourage them to try it. Volunteering is a great way to give back, meet new people, and learn new things. Libraries offer a lot more than people expect.
What are you passionate about—inside or outside of the library?
I’m really interested in the arts and humanities. I think art and storytelling are important because they help people express emotions and understand different perspectives.
