A Hawaiian Travelogue pt. 2

The Hawaiian Islands are a really beautiful place to visit. And, in doing so, it is important to be a good guest during your visit. In my humble opinion, it is best to be a good guest wherever you visit in this world. Take some time to learn the history, language, and cultural values of where you visit, and you may have a better experience overall. Be patient and show a bit of grace. You never know where it may lead. (In our case, we were shown a sweet surfing spot in Kauai-a place typically only frequented by locals). Familiarize yourself before you embark upon your adventure.

Final Thoughts:

  1. Check out the Pronunciator database on the San Jose Public Library website for lessons in the Hawaiian Language.
  2. Always be respectful of private property.
  3. Drive slowly and cautiously. You're on Island Time. There's no need to rush about.
  4. Be respectful of local wildlife and nature.
  5. Clean up after yourself.
  6. Buy from local artisans and crafters rather than mass-produced items. It supports the local economy, and you may even create good connections with the local artists (especially if you have your own gifts or talents to share).
