Get a Free Book, Oct. 24–31, 2026

San José Public Library (SJPL) is excited to bring back our annual Halloween Booktacular Giveaway! From Saturday, Oct. 24, through Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, all youth ages 0–18 can stop by any of our library locations to pick out one free book of their choice. 

Giveaways are available while supplies last. Costumes are welcome, but not required. 

How to Get Your Free Book

  • Youth must claim their book in person. Parents or other caregivers cannot pick up a book on a child's behalf.
  • Limit one book per person.
  • No program registration or library card is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate in the SJPL Halloween Booktacular Giveaway?
Youth ages 0–18 can visit any of our library locations during open hours. This giveaway is not open to adults. No registration is required.

Can adults claim a free book?
No. This program is for youth ages 0–18 only.

Is a library card required?
No. An SJPL library card is not required to claim a free book, but we encourage all residents to own their own library card.

Do we need to sign up for or attend an SJPL program to receive a book?
No. Event registration or attendance not required. Youth are welcome at our Halloween programs, but participation in the giveaway is optional. 

Are there only Halloween-themed books available?
No. While spooky titles will be available, we will also have a variety of other genres to choose from.

Do youth need to wear a costume?
No. Costumes are not required, but they are welcome and encouraged.
