"We don't make mistakes--we have happy accidents." You may know Bob Ross from a YouTube short, Tiktok, or his show The Joy of Painting. If you've never heard of him until now, that's okay! He was a famous painter that popularized the above quote, which can be applied to any art form.
Growing up, one thing I hated to do was make a mistake, especially with art. This feeling made it really hard to start art projects or be proud of what I crated. If you feel the same way about art, check out some of SJPL's upcoming programs inspired by our Graphic Novel Making Contest! We'd love for you to participate and explore your creative side, mistakes and all!
You can craft your own superhero, create picture frames and bookmarks, decorate a sketchbook at home, and even sew with comic book fabric! There's tons of ways to participate. Take a kit home or attend an event with your friends and family. Find what works best for you!
Programs for Everyone
Personally, I love collaging--making something new out of old or unrelated items.
Stop by the Alviso, Evergreen, or Willow Glen Branches for Frame the Fun: Comic Art Workshop to explore this art form! An example of this craft is pictured to the left.
Biblioteca Latinoamericana will also be hosting this event on Sunday July 26th for their Sunday Crafternoon.
If you're on the go or feel more comfortable crafting at home, stop by Biblioteca Latinoamericana to pick up a Graphic Novel Sketchbook kit!
This kit has all the supplies you need to decorate your very own sketchbook!
An example of this craft is pictured to the right.
While you pick up your craft or join a library program, be sure to search for books like the ones below for inspiration!
And remember to happily embrace your mistakes and keep creating!
