A Look Back at Almaden's History
The Current Library Opens in 2006
According to a Janice Rombeck article from the San Jose Mercury News, the 64,740 square foot Almaden Branch and Community Center opened as the city's first grand scale joint-use building in 2006.¹
The Original Almaden Branch Library
Before the current library and community center opened in 2006, the former Almaden Branch Library was built in 1971, and opened formally in 1972.
The Evolution of Almaden Valley
1890 and 1903
The blue arrow shows the approximate location of the Almaden Branch Library and Community Center. These maps show the land was owned by Mrs. C. Layden, south of Dwyer Road, which would later become part of modern day Camden Avenue. The checkered railroad like that forms a triangle between Dwyer Road and the Layden property lines is the approximate location of the modern day Library (see blue arrows).
Growth of the Neighborhood
Signs of the suburban sprawl beginning to cover the are around the Almaden Branch Library (gold arrow) in 1963 and even more homes by 1968.
