Visitor Guidelines For Personal Belongings
The San José Public Library and San José State University are committed to providing a Library environment that is safe and welcoming to all. To achieve this, the City and University have jointly agreed upon the following guidelines for visitors/customers regarding allowable personal belongings at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and all San José Public Library facilities.
Oversized items are generally not allowed. Examples of restricted items include, but are not limited to:
• Bedrolls and bedding
• Extra-Large suitcases
• Four-wheel shopping carts
• Large plastic bags
Items with wheels will only be allowed when utilized for their intended purpose, including, but not limited to:
- Rollator/walker devices
- Skateboards and fold up bicycles or scooters – only allowed if carried
Exceptions for oddly-sized items may be allowed, if they do not obstruct walkways or create a safety hazard. Examples of allowable items, by exception, include, but are not limited to:
- Musical Instruments
- Artist Portfolios
- Architecture tubes
- Sports equipment
Any item may be disallowed if it presents a potential health or safety risk for staff or other Library visitors.
No items should be left unattended. Unattended items are subject to confiscation. The Library is not responsible for personal items that are lost, stolen, or damaged in or on the grounds of the Library.
