Winter is officially upon us! As everyone gets excited for the New Year, SJPL is excited to announce our annual Winter Reading program. This is one of our many annual literacy events to encourage kids, adults, and families to read and learn all year round.

It is super easy to sign up, log your reading, and win great prizes. Simply register using Beanstack to get started and log your reading. If you have participated in our Summer Learning program, you can log in using the same Beanstack account.

Details

  • When: Winter Reading runs from January 1 – January 31, 2023.
  • Who Can Participate:
    • Individuals: Children, teens, adults, and families can all sign up on their own.
    • Large Groups: People can also sign up under one big group as part of a class, book club, or other large party.
    • Classes: Local educators are encouraged to pre-register their class(es) between December 12 – 31, 2022. This is a great way to read and learn together as a group.
  • Why Participate: All who participate are eligible to win fun and exciting prizes.

From January 1 – 31, 2023, registered adults can select a fun emoji keychain (limit one per person, while supplies last) from any SJPL location. Registered youth ages 0–18 can select a keychain or pick out 2 free prize books!

How to Qualify for Grand Prizes

Qualifying for a cool winter reading grand prize is easy:

  • Register: Individuals simply register for Winter Reading via Beanstack beginning Monday, December 12, 2022.
  • Read: Then read a total of 4 hours (or 4 books for youth ages 0-5) between January 1 – 31, 2023.
  • Read More for MORE Chances to Win: The more reading that is logged, the more total grand prize entries that can be earned.

Special Prizes for Classes

Local educators can join in the Winter Reading fun and sign up an entire class on Beanstack (as a group). Signing up as a class will make you eligible to win a grand prize book bundle for your classroom! Each book bundle will include a variety of age-appropriate titles, genres and characters.

Who can participate in SJPL Winter Reading 2023?
Individuals and groups are both encouraged to participate for a chance at fun participation prizes, as well as exciting grand prizes.

How can someone register for Winter Reading?
Registration is available online via Beanstack, as well as via the Beanstack mobile app, or on-site at any SJPL location. Register via Beanstack as an individual or as a class or group.

When does registration begin?
Pre-registration began Monday, December 12, 2022. Pick up your registration prize and log your reading from January 1 – 31, 2023.

Do patrons have to sign up for a library card, or any other program, to participate in Winter Reading?
A library card is NOT required to participate, but SJPL membership is always encouraged.

What type of prize books will be available?
A wide variety of genres will be available for youth ages 0–18, including chapter books, easy readers, picture books, baby board books, graphic novels, and more.

What is the other free giveaway prize?
A fun, emoji keychain — available to all ages — while supplies last. Limit one per person. No exceptions.

What is the eligibility rules for the giveaway prizes?
Registered adults can claim a free emoji keychain, at any SJPL location. Registered youth, ages 0–18, can claim two free prize books OR one emoji keychain—not both.

Do adults or their child have to claim their free prize books or giveaway prize in person?
YES, all adults and youth MUST claim their free participation prize IN PERSON at any SJPL location. No exceptions.

Can students registered as a class/group also claim a giveaway prize?
YES. Any student who is registered for Winter Reading as part of a class/group can claim a giveaway prize, same as anyone else. All giveaways MUST be claimed in person at a local SJPL branch. Giveaway prizes WILL NOT be set aside on site or sent to local schools. Educators, please remind students to claim their giveaway prize in person at any SJPL location.

What are the grand prizes for SJPL Winter Reading 2023?
There will be five grand prizes awarded in all. One grand prize per age group (see grand prize descriptions). The group grand prize are book bundles of age-appropriate titles.

Can youth be registered for Winter Reading both individually AND as part of a class or group?
YES. Youth can be registered for Winter Reading on their own AND as part of a class/group, as there are separate grand prize contests for groups and individuals. Contact us with any additional questions.

Can customers claim prize books or giveaway prizes after January 31?
NO. The Winter Reading program ends on January 31, 2023.

Will grand prize winners who claim their prizes be sent a 1099-MISC tax form for the value of the prize? Or since the value of each prize is under $600 does SJPL forego issuing the 1099 since there is not a requirement to do so?

I really loved participating in Winter Reading Challenge. Are there any upcoming reading challenge? Also when will you announce the winners of winter reading challenge?
