Introducing Maher Penglin

Maher demonstrating the Virtual Reality equipment

Maher Penglin has been volunteering with San José Public Library since 2017. He contributed almost 70 hours of volunteering in 2019. He has been an incredible help in restarting, maintaining, and growing the Virtual Reality program at Evergreen Branch Library.

Not only is he very reliable when it comes to his scheduled volunteer shifts, but he also comes often to help on VR days when he is not scheduled because he enjoys it so much, and he can always be counted on in a pinch if we need backup. In addition to volunteering for our VR program he also helps with our Friends of the Library book sales, and the Friends volunteers have commented on how much they enjoy volunteering with him.

A Chat with Maher

As a child... I liked playing games and reading comic books.

My fondest memory... was being a winner in the 2015 Graphic Novel Making Contest.

I am most proud of... my work ethic and the help I am able to give people as a library volunteer.

My biggest challenge... was trying to beat the game Jak II.

My role model... is Mr. Beast (YouTuber and one of the founders of the 'Team Trees' collaborative fundraiser).

My community... is all my friends hanging out, doing homework together, and being nice to each other.

Libraries are... the place I have fun with my friends.

My favorite book, movie, or song is... Book is Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Movie is either Detective Pikachu or The Spiderman Trilogy by Sam Raimi.

If I had a super power, it would be... the ability to turn my head 180 degrees (but not 360 because I'm not an owl).

I volunteer... to get out of the house, have fun, and to talk to new people and make friends.

If I wasn't volunteering, I'd be... at home, sitting on the couch, playing games.
