Summer Learning: Graphic Novels


We are another week into Summer Learning, and this week we are focusing on some of the amazing Graphic Novels available from the library. Do you love to draw and tell stories? In addition to reading some of the titles on the Graphic Novel Booklist, you can make your own and enter it into the library's Graphic Novel Making Contest. Let your creativity flow in this annual all ages competition, check out last year's winners and hurry with your submission as entries close July 31. In the mean time, here are some of our favorite graphic novels that we put together in the Graphic Novel Booklist and always available online comics on Overdrive and Hoopla.

Graphic Novels for Children

Follow along with the adorable adventures of Baloney and Friends in this beginning reader graphic novel series. With lots of jokes and cute drawings, this series is sure to delight. Rii Abrego enchants in The Sprite and the Gardener, a beautiful whimsical graphic novel about sprites and friendship, or read all about a young chef and a strange crop of potatoes that changes everything in Chef Yasmina and the Potato Panic in this hilarious graphic novel.

Graphic Novels for Teens

Almost American Girl is a memoir about a Korean girl who moves to the United States as a teenage and struggles to fit in, but finds a love of comics that helps break her out of her shell and start to connect. In Life of Melody a beast man and fairy godfather raise an abandon child in the human world. A sweet and charming LGBTQ+ rom-com, this magical family tale is sure to be a new favorite. Trickster: Native American Tales combines Native American folklore with the world of comics. Including over twenty Native American tales, this graphic novel is a beautiful collaboration between native authors and talented illustrators.

Lastly, check out a few great graphic novels for adults such as Wash Day Diaries, a series of stories that celebrate Black joy and the resilience of black women as they share how they care for each other. Interested in comic anthologies? Check out Sensory, a comic about life on the spectrum with contributions from 30 autistic creators or The Eightfold Path, a comic about Buddhism that combines sci-fi pulp art and classic social narratives.
