We're happy to introduce District 6 Councilmember Devora "Dev" Davis. Since 2017, Councilmember Davis has represented District 6 neighborhoods which include Bascom, Rose Garden, and Willow Glen.
We're excited to have her participate in our Leaders x Libraries blog series to share what she loves most about libraries and how libraries have shaped her life while growing up.

Q. What is your hometown?
A. Dickinson, North Dakota and San José, CA
Q. Do you have an SJPL Library Card?
A. Yes!
Q. Where did you get your first library card?
A. Dickinson Public Library
Q. Which do you prefer, physical books, eBooks, or Audiobooks/eAudiobooks?
A. Physical Books
Q. What is your favorite book and why?
A. For a long time, my favorite book was Jane Eyre. I still love that book. I also love pretty much everything ever written by Seanan McGuire, Octavia Butler, and N.K. Jemisin.
Q. What are you currently reading or learning?
A. This week I'm reading some Whedonverse comic books I recently bought and in the car I'm listening to 12-Week Year.
Q. What does the library mean to you, and why do you think libraries are essential to society?
A. The library has always been my escape. It's a quiet, peaceful place amidst a noisy, busy world. At the same time, every book opens the door to a new world or a new way of thinking and a way of connecting with unfamiliar people and ideas. Libraries are essential because they provide both the escape and the connections that every human needs.
Q. How did the library shape your life while growing up?
A. The library was the first place I could go on my own. I would ride my bike to the library and pick whatever I wanted to read. I remember feeling free and independent at the library.
Q. How do you see libraries shaping the city's future?
A. Our libraries provide places for people to learn and gather and grow. Our librarians have also worked hard to ensure that everyone in our community has access to digital resources, and they even hold coding workshops. Our San José libraries are working to ensure a more equitable future.
Q. Why is it important for everyone to exercise their right to library?
A. Libraries are the ultimate public resource. You can access so much knowledge and entertainment for FREE!
