Institute of Contemporary Art San José and SJPL Present: In Conversation with Artist Amir H. Fallah

San José Public Library is excited to announce a collaborative project with the Institute of Contemporary Art San José: the ICA x SJPL Artist Mix. This series of online programs hosted by SJPL will feature artists whose work is currently exhibited at the ICA as they discuss books, films, and music that have inspired their artistic practice. Over a two-month period for each artist, library members may explore these selected materials, then attend a public program on Zoom in which our featured artist discusses the materials’ influence on their artwork. These events will feature ICA curators and SJSU faculty who will provide additional insight into the selected materials. In addition to these programs, the ICA x SJPL Artist Mix will feature online book discussions for public engagement, each meeting focusing on one of the books recommended by the featured artist.

Amir H. Fallah, whose work exhibited at the ICA may be viewed on their website, will be the inaugural artist featured by our project. Born in Tehran, Iran in 1979, Fallah received a BFA in fine art and painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, and an MFA in painting at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and abroad.

Artist's Picks

Amir Fallah has selected the following books, films, and music as representative influences on his artistic practice and worldview:

Ninth Street Women by Mary Gabriel
Diet for A New America by John Robbins

The Game Changers (not available at SJPL, available on Netflix)
Herb and Dorothy

Run the Jewels 3 by Run the Jewels

We encourage library members to explore and enjoy these recommended materials, and to learn about and discuss their significance and their influence on Fallah’s artwork in the online programs to come.

Online Programs

The first ICA x SJPL Artist Mix online talk is scheduled for Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at 6:00 PM. The Institute for Contemporary Art San José will be hosting and holding registration for this event. See their webpage on this series of exciting programs here.

SJPL will be hosting an accompanying online book discussion program on May 5, 2021 at 7:00 pm. The book selected by Amir H. Fallah which we will discuss is Diet for A New America by John Robbins. Robbins' book, first published in 1987, updated in a 2012 edition, and still fully timely, is a powerful and eye-opening look at the shocking impacts of factory farming and the health and environmental benefits of choosing a strongly plant-based diet. If you are interested in reading and then discussing this ground-breaking and historic book with others online, please register. We look forward to seeing you.
