End of the Year Reading List: Books Adapted to Movies in 2018

The year is coming to an end, and the weather is perfect for curling up on the couch with a book; you might be looking for some ideas on what to read next. I love to see what movies are being released next year, based on books, and then read those books.

The year 2018 will be filled with movies adapted from books. The list I've compiled has something for everyone. San José Public Library has many of these items available in multiple formats, including eBooks and audiobooks.

A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L'Engle

The film adaption of this popular book is directed by Ava Duvernay and will also have a star-studded cast including Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Oprah Winfrey, and more. The theatrical release date is March 9, 2018.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Beatrix Potter

This classic children's book about a rabbit who disobeys his mother is being made into a movie starring Daisey Ridley, Rose Byrne, and Domhnall Gleeson. The movie will be released on February 9, 2018.

The House With a Clock in its Walls, John Bellairs

This gothic children's novel is about a child that goes to live with his magician uncle whose house contains a hidden clock that counts down to doomsday. The movie adaption will feature actors Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Kyle MacLachlan. The movie will be in theaters on September 21, 2018.

The Death Cure, James Dashner

The much-anticipated final chapter in the Maze Runner trilogy will be released in theaters on January 26, 2018.

The Invisible Man, H.G. Wells

The adaption of this classic novel about a scientist who discovers a way to make himself invisible, and then terrorizes a small town, will star Johnny Depp and be released in Spring of 2018.

The Darkest Minds, Alexandra Bracken

This popular YA Fiction book is about a sixteen-year-old who breaks out of a "rehabilitation camp" for teens who have dangerous powers after surviving a virus that killed most of the population. The film adaption is scheduled to be released in September 2018 and will star Mandy Moore, Gwendoline Christie, and more.

Fifty Shades Freed, EL James

The final installment of the popular book and film series will hit theaters on February 9, 2018.

Ready Player One, Ernest Cline

This cult-classic book is set in a dystopian future where the main character must search for an Easter Egg in a virtual reality game that promises a fortune if found. The movie is directed by Steven Spielberg and is set to release on March 30, 2018.

Boy Erased, Garrad Conley

This book is a true account of the author's life. He was a young Baptist, forced by his parents to go to a sexual-conversion program hosted by his church. The movie will star Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe and is set to hit theaters in September, 2018.

The Black Hand, Stephan Talty

This book covers the true story of the beginning of the Mafia in America in the early 1900's and a detective who tried to fight it. Leonardo DiCaprio is producing and starring in the film, which is coming out late in 2018.
