Become a Pokémon Master at Your Local Library

Do You Want to be the Very Best?

For the last week or so Pokémon Go has taken the world by storm and I couldn’t be happier.  As someone who grew up during the 90’s when Pokémon was huge, I feel a prick of nostalgia every time I see someone out hunting for Pokémon.  It takes me back to days when I would run home from school and turn on the T.V to watch the anime or I would head outside to trade cards with my friends. I devoured the manga and constantly looked for new ways to share my love of Pokémon. Everyone wanted to become a Pokémon master back then and thanks to Pokémon Go and your local library, now you really can catch ‘em all!

So What Exactly is Pokémon Go?

Pokémon Go is a game available on Android and IOS devices that allows you to “catch” Pokémon virtually. Based on the popular 90’s Pokémon video games and combining it with technology used in the recent Ingress game, Pokémon Go uses your mobile device’s GPS and camera to show Pokémon in the player’s real world surroundings. Once you spot a Pokémon, you have the chance to catch it using a Poké ball.  You can find Pokémon by walking around and using an in-app map that shows you the location of wild Pokémon. Once you capture a Pokémon, it will be added to your Pokédex. A Pokédex is a digital encyclopedia of the Pokémon you have captured.

What is a Poké Stop or Pokémon Gym?

While the object of the game is to “Catch ‘em all” players must also find Poke Stops which allow them to collect Poké balls, eggs and other special items. One item that can drop is a lure module. A lure module can be attached to a Poké Stop and it allows any Pokémon trainers in the area to catch more Pokémon for 30 minutes. Want to attract more people to your business or library? If your location is a Poké Stop you can place a lure to attract more foot traffic. Poke Stops can be anything from national landmarks, city buildings and even libraries! That’s right; chances are your local library is either a Poke stop or a gym! Have a suggestion for a Poké Stop or gym?  Check out this page to request spots new gyms and Poké Stops or to suggest removing one.

I mentioned that your local library could be a gym, but what are gyms? Once you reach level 5, you have the option of joining one of three teams- Team Valor, Team Mystic or Team Instinct- and you can battle other players in Pokémon Gyms. Gyms can be controlled by one team at a time and if you are part of a gym you get extra items and Poké coins.

Thanks for the tutorial and for the info about your Instagram account! My teen son & I have had a blast collecting Pokemon together!

So happy to hear that you and your son are having a blast!

Thanks for sharing this

Thank you so much for the great information about Pokemon go! My husband and I have been having a blast playing it and catching Pokemon together as a family when we go out places. We love to go on hikes or for a walk around our neighborhood. It gets us out of the house and enjoying each other's company while relaxing in the outdoor sun. It's been great fun!

My husband and I have been going to all sorts of places together thanks to Pokemon Go! I especially love seeing all the parks in San Jose, they are great for catching Pokemon.

Thanks for the tutorial! I've been a Pokemon fan since I was a child. However I'm a bit hesitant with the trends. Recently I've been eyeing this app and now I'm slot more informed.

I am glad that you are considering playing the app and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

While playing Pokemon Go may be a good idea for some ppl for the fun and stress reliever aspects - I do not believe playing Pokemon Go is a healthy habit. To put it simply, it may cause the same effects as driving while talking/texting. Play safe, everyone!

Thanks for the info! My young son loves playing the game, and I love that it's getting him to be even more active!

Thanks for your information. My son loves to play pokemon games. I would like to receive information about pokemon games to help my son. I also found a very useful information for my son here.
