Children's Room

If you're ever looking for something to do with the family on a Saturday afternoon then the Children's Room of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library is the place to be. See what we have in store for the whole family in the month of May. Please note that our special Puppet Show is at 11:00AM.

 

May 5 @ 3:00PM: STUFF! An Arts and Craft Program for Children: Boys and girls will celebrate the month of May with 2 fun crafts; girls will make a beautiful hair garland and the boys will become kings for the day with their bejeweled crowns! Join us for this free, fun program.

May 12 @ 11:00AM: Puppet Show with Edgar "Zancudo" Sanchez: Let's celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a puppet show based on multi-cultural folk legends, fables and stories. Edgar Zancudo Sanchez, a local artist, will entertain the whole family with an interactive show. Don't miss this fun event.

 

May 19 @ 3:00PM: Games for Kids: Dream Big! This program is a preview of our Summer Reading Celebration which starts on June 1. Children will enjoy games and puzzles related to this summer's theme: Dream Big, Read! Learn more about our summer reading celebration and have fun too! May 26 @ 3:00PM: ABC to Drawing: Did you know you could draw pictures using the letters of the alphabet and numbers? Our volunteer, Vidhi, will show us how it's done; children will be so proud of their masterpieces. What Is That Instrument?


Book Cover: Those Amazing Musical InstrumentsIf you've every wondered what the name of a particular instrument is then we have the program just right for you and your children. Join us on Saturday, April 28 at 3:00PM at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library for the Instrument Petting Zoo! Nova Vista Symphony will demonstrate instruments of the ochestra and then allow children to touch and play many of them. Children will have fun hearing the story of these instruments and how they work together to produce a symphony.

After the program children may be interested in checking out books or DVDs where they can learn even more about musical instruments. You don't want to miss this fun event for children and their parents and remember it is FREE!



Super Saturday Programs at King Library


King Library university side exterior. The Children's Room of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library offers super Saturday programs each Saturday at 3:00PM. March offers craft programs, a puppet show, a science magic show and more. Check out our March line up below.

 

 

  • March 3: Game Day: Do you like to play games? Join us for some board game fun.
  • March 10: Taiwanese Glove Puppet Show: The San Jose-Tainan Sister City Organization will be presenting "The Twelve Animals of the Zodiac." Join us for this unique puppet show featuring hand glove puppets.
  • March 17: Xtreme Science Magic Show with Don O'Brien: This show is science, magic and bubble fun all in one. Join us for a fun filled interactive program for the whole family.
  • March 24: ABC to Drawing: Did you know you could draw pictures using the letters of the alphabet and numbers? Our volunteer, Vidhi, will show us how it's done; children will be so proud of their masterpieces.   • March 31: Snow Day with the Children's Discovery Museum: We'll be having a snow day in the Exploration Room. Children will be using microscopes to compare real snow to instant snow. Because of the hands-on nature of the program seating is limited; so come early and get a spot.


February's Super Saturday Programs at King Library


Book Cover: FebruaryEach Friday we offer Friday Fun at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and now each Saturday we have our Super Saturday programs. Our Saturday programs start at 3:00PM unless otherwise noted. February offers crafts, drawing lessons, a puppet show and even a visit by a well known author. Here's what we have in store for you in February:

 

  • February 4: Stuff! An Arts and Crafts Program for Children: Since it's February our talented volunteer, Chris, has prepared a program with a Valentine theme. Come check it out. We supply the materials you supply your creativity and imagination.

 

  • February 11: Nick Barone Puppets presents the Enchanted Forest:  Travel to the Enchanted Forest and meet the Biggest Little Bug and the Grumpy Old Tree and other whimsical characters. Nick Barone will enchant us all with his wonderful puppets and stories.  After the show, Nick always shows how the magic is made: we get to see backstage, meet the puppets and see how Nick makes them perform! This is a great event for the whole family.

 

  • February 18: ABC to Drawing: Our newest volunteer, Vidhi, will teach children how to draw using what they know: the letters of the alphabet and numbers. In January the children learned how to draw a tiger, monkey and bee. See how it's done! A program for all ages. You can also check out Vidhi's blog post  http://abc-to-drawing.blogspot.com/

     
  • February 25: Meet author Dr. Asma Mobin-Uddin: Dr. Mobin-Uddin is the author of the children's book My Name is Bilal. She will discuss the themes of her book in an interactive presentation that also answers questions about Islam's beliefs and religious practices. Super Saturday Programs at King Library


King Library (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library)It's a Saturday and your kids are bored or you're wondering what would be a great way to spend some quality time with your family. Well, come down to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in downtown San Jose and check out this amazing building! There are 8 floors to wander through, interesting artworks just waiting to be discovered and of course a wonderful Children's Room to visit. Time your visit so that you can enjoy these wonderful programs that we will be having in the Children's Room at 3:00PM.

 

  • January  7: ABC to Drawing - This is a new program being offered by our wonderful volunteer Vidhi. Vidhi teaches the children how to create pictures using the letters of the alphabet and numbers. In this first program she taught the kids how to draw a monkey, bee, tiger and lion. The children and adults who attended had a great time.   • January 14: Celebrate Dr. King's Birthday with Stories and Crafts - January 16 is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Come listen to stories, sing some songs and create some crafts all in honor of this great man. The King Library has a Dr. Martin Luther King Civil Rights Collection on the 3rd floor with a time line, books, dvds and cds. Check it out and of course the San Jose Public Library system offers many books on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  that can be borrowed.
  • January 21: Stuff! An Arts and Crafts Program for Children - This special program is offered each month by our talented volunteer Chris. Chris always offers an interesting program so join us on the 21st and see what fun activity she's cooked up.
  • January 28: Mad Science: Up, Up and Away - Join Mad Science for this fun, educational program especially for children ages 5-12. We will observe the creation of a hot air balloon, giant smoke rings generated by a vortex generator and see a hovercraft in action. WOW!

So mark these dates on your calendar and make your Saturdays, Super Saturdays at the King Library. Remember all the programs are FREE!
