25th Annual San Jose Children's Faire!

The Faire is expected to draw over 5,000 attendees to the outdoor festival, held at Discovery Meadow (in front of the Children's Discovery Museum), in downtown San José.

The theme this year is "Explore the Possibilities" and features family-oriented stage entertainment, special attractions, and activity booths offering hands-on activities for children ages 2-12.  Families can obtain information about education, child care, recreational programs and health and safety resources.

Remember hockey? Yeah, I do too! I know many of us Sharks fans are disappointed beyond words about the NHL Lockout, but we are also a resourceful bunch, and will find other things to keep us busy. Here is my list of things you can do to occupy your time when you would normally watch a game:

Read about hockey

The library has it all whether you are a history buff, want to read about your favorite player, or are sharpening your own skills on the ice. One of our newer titles, Hockey’s Greatest Stars: legends and young lions, profiles some of the greatest players in NHL history as well as new hopefuls.

For those new parents who are wondering, “How do I possibly introduce hockey to my child in a meaningful way? Especially if they can’t even stand up to ice-skate?” The library is your source for early literacy through hockey. Christopher Jordan’s My First NHL Series includes Hockey ABC and Hockey Animals.

Go to a hockey game

Support the San Francisco Bulls inaugural season by attending one of their games at the Cow Palace. The Bulls are part of the ECHL and are an official affiliate of our SJ Sharks. They recently traveled to the South Bay to play a game at The Tank and brought in over 12,000 hockey fans. 

Support local hockey

There is still hockey going on!  Check out Sharks Ice where youth and adult leagues are still on the ice. Take lessons, join a team, or even try out one of their drop-in hockey afternoons.  

Support local businesses

Without more than 17,000 fans hitting the streets of downtown San Jose several times a week, many local businesses are feeling the effects of the lockout too. Come downtown and visit your favorite eats, bars, museums and retail stores.

Tibetan Monks from the Drepung Loseling Phukhang Monastery return to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library November 13-17, 2012 to the spread the message of world peace and compassion as they build a Sand Mandala, an ancient art form from Tibetan Buddhism. 

The creation of a Sand Mandala is meant to generate a profound experience of compassion.  The positive effects of a Sand Mandala are believed to radiate out over an entire region, blessing the environment and the beings therein, as an effort for world peace.  Once created, the Sand Mandala is destroyed in the closing ceremony, as a lesson in the impermanence of all life.  

Ceremonies and construction will take place in the Library Lobby on 4th and East San Fernando St.  This event is free and open to the public.

SAN JOSE, Calif.—San José Children’s Faire, to be held 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21st, is expected to draw over 5,000 attendees to Discovery Meadow (in front of the Children’s Discovery Museum) in downtown San José. “Rock, Roll and Read” is the theme for this year’s annual event, which features family-oriented stage entertainment, special attractions, and activity booths offering hands-on activities for children, ages two to 12, in addition to information for families about education, child care, health and safety resources, and recreational programs.

The Faire, now in its 24^th year, is a free, one-day, outdoor festival designed to link parents and caregivers of young children with community organizations that serve their needs and is the highlight of the City of San José’s “Month of the Young Child” celebration.

The “Month of the Young Child” is the local extension of the national “Week of the Young Child” celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. It was established in 1971 in recognition that early childhood experiences (birth to age 8) lay the foundation for success in school and later life.

On Tuesday, April 3rd, San José City Council proclaimed April 2012 as “Month of the Young Child” in the City of San José, encouraging both individuals and organizations to support this observance.  Additional activities marking San José Public Library’s celebration of the “Month of the Young Child” include:

• City Council recognition of this year’s recipients of the “Outstanding Contributors to Child Care Awards” on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 in San José City Hall Council Chambers.
• Children’s art displays, providing insight into the imagination and development of young children at the Children’s Faire.
• More activities at selected library branches may be located by visiting San José Public Library MOYC events  .
