Learn to Code for Free

Although, not my usual business related post... I wanted to share a cool website where you can learn to code for free. So, if you're one of those people who think Javascript is some sort of coffee drink, Codecademy can help. You can learn some of the most popular coding languages such as Python and HTML. I've tried it out, it's easy to follow and they make the lessons fun.

Featured Online Resource: CustomGuide

CustomGuide is pretty cool. What is it? It's free online computer training. Accessible online from home or work. You can learn software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Quickbooks and a bunch of other software programs too. Did I mention this resource is free with a San José Public Library card? This is a great resource if you need to brush up on your computer skills or perhaps you have staff that need a little bit of extra computer training.

What's a Library Good For?

Teens using computers at Edenvale LibraryWhat do you come to the library to do? A good book, information for a research project, computers for using Facebook, story times, and adult programs, a comfy chair for lounging in while drinking coffee and chatting with friends - yep, that's right, you can get it all at the library.

Not only this, but in these tough economic times, doesn't it make sense to check out those bestselling books and DVD's from your library? Why spend money on books and music when you can get these things for free on our Freegal and OverDrive databases.  You don't even know what those are, you say?  Check out our Downloads page to learn more about all the great resources you can get access to with your library card.

The library is no longer a place you go just to get books and information; it's now a place to go to make life more enjoyable. Books, movies, computer access, programs, and community. This is today's library.

Transcendent Man and Singularity

Transcendent Man: A Conversation About the Future was broadcasted on Wednesday August 3rd in 500+ movie theaters across the country. The speakers panel included physicist Michio Kaku, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, inventor Dean Kamen and others. It was a live discussion of the Transcendent Man documentary by Barry Ptolemy with the subject of it - futurist Ray Kurzweil present. Discussion explored Ray Kurzweil's idea that in next twenty years exponential growth in nanotechnology, genetic engineering and robotics will lead to merging between man and machines that is called Technological Singularity. Our library has the following several books by Kurzweil that explain his ideas and the movie Transcendent Man.
