Our library recently subscribed to a new Chinese electronic magazine database called Bookan.
Bookan is a magazine database which contains over three thousand titles covering a broad range of subjects including politics, business, science, health, literature and entertainment with coverage going back for one to three years. Information is updated daily for over one hundred magazines.
The two browsing formats for Bookan are TEXT and PDF. In TEXT browsing, readers can adjust the font color and the font size from small to medium or large, as well as print the articles. However, the PDF format preserves the original look and format of the magazine. In the PDF format, readers can flip pages, magnify the pages, as well as read the articles in a side-by-side format.
Remote access to Bookan is available at http://sjpl.org/databases#Non-
After simply entering your library card number and PIN, you can browse the database with your smart phone, mobile device and e-reader everywhere and anytime you want. Enjoy!

Mo
Yan, the prolific Chinese writer, was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. Soon after the announcement was made in October, curiosity about who Mo Yan is and discussion about his work has been endless. Mo Yan’s novels sold well, and publishers rushed to reprint. Readers checked out every copy of his work from libraries.
Mo Yan is a pseudonym; in Chinese, it means "don’t speak". He chose this pen name as a reminder to himself to be cautious of saying things that offend China’s censorship policies. Growing up in poverty and surviving the Cultural Revolution, Mo Yan often portrays unique life experiences and his childhood village as the background in many of his books. His first Chinese novel was published in 1986. A few years later, more books were published in Chinese and translated into various foreign languages.
San Jose Library has a variety of Mo Yan’s collections in Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Korean and so on. For a complete list of his work, please refer to the official website of the Nobel Prize.
