Leer, Escribir, Descubrir en La Biblioteca Latinoamericana


Read Write Discover Logo¿Tiene su hijo(a) dificultades con la lectura o con la escritura? Habrá ayuda disponible este verano de Read Write Discover (RWD), un programa de tutoría de lectura en la Biblioteca Latinoamericana.   El programa es gratuito y está dirigido a los estudiantes que tienen problemas con la lectura, o cuyas familias enfrentan barreras de idioma en sus comunidades. Los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria se capacitarán ayudar a los niños en los grados 1-8 en la lectura y la escritura.

La sesión comienza con una orientación para la familia en lunes, el 10 de junio 2013 de 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.. Los tutores trabajan con los mismos estudiantes cada semana  los lunes y los martes de 11:00 am - 12:30 pm en determinadas semanas durante los meses de junio, julio y agosto.

Habrá ayuda disponible este verano de Read Write Discover (RWD), un programa de tutoría de lectura en la Biblioteca East San José Carnegie.   El programa es gratuito y está dirigido a los estudiantes que tienen problemas con la lectura, o cuyas familias enfrentan barreras de idioma en sus comunidades. Los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria se capacitarán ayudar a los niños en los grados 1-8 en la lectura y la escritura.

The program is free, and is aimed at students who have trouble reading, or whose families face language barriers in their communities. High school students will be trained to help children in grades 1-8 with reading and writing.

 

The session begins with an orientation for families on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 from 11:00 - 1:00 PM. Tutors work with the same students each week on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm on specific weeks during during June, July and August.

Family Learning Center Reading Classes for Children


Image of applesThe Family Learning Center at the East San Jose Carnegie Branch Library hosts reading classes for children.   

Wednesdays
1st Grade Reading Level 3:30 - 4:00 PM
2nd Grade Reading Level 3:30 - 4:00 PM
3rd Grade Reading Level 3:30 - 4:00 PM

4th Grade Reading Level 4:00 - 4:30 PM
5th Grade Reading Level 4:00 - 4:30 PM

 

  • Readers will be reading from TumbleBooks.
  • Readers meet at the Family Learning Center classroom.
  • Class size is limited.  Readers attend at their level.
  • First come first served.  
  • This ongoing class is FREE!

This program is brought to you by the Family Learning Center.

The FLC Coordinator will recommend the appropriate class for the reader.

Summer Reading Celebration Kickoff Event at King Library


King Library

Everyone is invited to our Summer Reading Celebration Kickoff Event on Sunday, June 2 at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, starting at 1:00 PM  to 4:00PM.

 

There will be many fun activities for the whole family to participate in:

 

  • Scavenger Hunt for All Ages: Look for some of the 34 Art Works that are located at the King Library from the Lower Level to the Fourth Floor, answer some fun questions about the King Library and our website. Please note that the last time to pick up a Scavenger Hunt Clue Sheet is at 3:00PM.
  • Crafts for Children and Teens: Dinosaur bone craft for kids and making beaded bracelets for teens.
  • Games for All: Dr. Seuss games for the young ones, and "Win in a Minute" games for the teens and adults. Lots of fun and laughs playing these games.
  • Entertainment: There will be drummers, balloonists, a juggler and multicultural music to appreciate.
  • Community Partners: We will have community partners available from 1:30 to 4:00 providing information about their groups and answering any questions you might have.
  • Prizes:  Everyone who participates in the Scavenger Hunt will receive a small gift and a chance to win some neat prizes.

You really don't want to miss this fun, FREE, event at your Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library!



Graphic Novel Making Contest 2013


Graphic Novel Making Contest logoIf you have a talent for creating comic/manga style illustrated short stories, you are invited to enter San José Public Library’s Graphic Novel Making Contest for all ages as part of our Summer Reading Celebration, 2013. This contest is sponsored by San José Public Library, Hijinx Comics, San José Museum of Art and TRY Japan Culture Group.

 

 

Here’s how to enter …

 

  • Create your own comic book with a maximum length of 8 pages, including the cover page.
  • Use letter-size paper (8.5 x 11) with black-and-white drawings and text on one side only.
  • Each submission must be the creative and original work of a single individual—the author/illustrator.
  • The contest is limited to amateur authors/ illustrators only.
  • Computer generated images are acceptable as long as they are your original work (no clip art)
  • Consider submitting a photocopy that is an accurate reflection of the original (as submissions are non-returnable).
  • San José Public Library reserves the right to reproduce your work. You can reuse all your work after the contest.
  • Be sure to print and complete the creative works release form. Include your Name, Age, Contact Information and Signature.
  • Entries can be submitted to any San José Public Library location no later than 8p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. 
  • Entries can also be submitted online to sjplgraphicnovelmakingcontest@gmail.com as a jpeg or pdf attachment.
  • There is a limit of one entry per contestant.

 

Entries will be judged on content and illustrations by a panel of library staff and comic industry professionals. All cash prizes will be awarded as gift cards. 

 

  • Children (up to age 6): first prize $25; second prize $15
  • Children (7-12): first prize $40; second prize $20
  • Teens (ages 13-17): first prize $100; second prize $70; third prize $50
  • Adults (age 18 and above): first prize $100; second prize $70; third prize $50

Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at a reception to be held at the Seven Trees Branch Library on Saturday, August 24th at 2:00 p.m.in the Community Room. 

 

Check out the award winning entries from 2012, 2011 and 2010.   

 

San José Public Library staff members are ineligible to participate.

San José Public Library reserves the right to refuse submissions that are not appropriate for a general audience. This contest is open to all California residents.



May 4th is Free Comic Book Day


Free Comic Book Day, 1st Saturday in May! May 4, 2013May 4, 2013 is Free Comic Book Day. Come by the library as early as you can so you can get your choice in free comic books while they last!

The Free Comic Book Day tradition started in 2002 and is celebrated by comic book stores and libraries every first Saturday of May. It's a great day to introduce or re-introduce yourself to comic books and graphic novels, and of course if you're already a current aficionado, this day is made for you. Enjoy.

Free Comic Book Day Occurs at the King Library, Willow Glen, East San Jose, Bascom and Seventrees branches.



Luce Puppet Company's The Wizard of Oz!


The Wizard of Oz by Luce Puppet CompanySanta Teresa Library's Friends of the Library are proud to sponsor Baum's enchanting story, The Wizard of Oz, in puppet format! Join us at 11:00 a.m. on April 27, 2013 for Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Woodsman, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow in the quest to find the magical wizard in the Emerald City. You've seen the movie, now see it live!



Puppet Show at King Library's Children's Room


 SeaSagaEveryone loves puppet shows! Join us for a fun one on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 3:00 PM in the Children's Room of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. The Luce Puppet Company will be presenting "The Splashy Sea Saga of Sailor Sam." We'll be sailing the Seven Seas with Sailor Sam and his little pal Salty as they search for adventure and treasure. We will meet mythical creatures along the way: a giant squid, a dangerous bunny, a fearsome dragon-roc, and a rather unusual mermaid. It will be a rollicking romp that everyone will enjoy. Don't miss it!

 

Want to put on your own puppet show? The library does offer many books on puppets, puppet making and puppet plays to get you started.
