Families for Literacy

Together We Read Book Drive Through February 25, 2012

PAR asked for donated new children's books for a book drive that ended January 20, 2012. You responded with over 1,200 books. The goal is to get over 3,000 books so that PAR families can read together at home and start home libraries. If you donate now, you can get a free or discounted coupon while supplies last to Disney on Ice Toy Story 3.

Do you remember that feeling you got as a child when you opened a brand new book? Do you remember the smell and even what it sounded like as you turned the brand new pages? You can help PAR families learn and explore together by donating new books for kids from birth to age 13. Please help them by donating a new, unwrapped book. Here are some links to book lists for children and for teens.

One of the most important ways to ensure literacy in children is to read aloud to them every day and read together as a family. In order to do that families need books and home libraries. Through Together We Read family literacy, children are given books to spark their imagination and develop those literacy skills. PAR gives new, colorful selections to children that entice and engage them.

Drop off your new books at the PAR office in the King Library or at your branch library and make sure they say PAR book drive on them. You will light up a child's eyes with your donation. You can also buy books or make a donation at Hicklebee's.

Here are some titles that were just donated to the Together We Read book drive.

Here is an article from the Los Angeles Times about an adult who struggled throughout his life with reading and writing. When he went to his local library and joined the tutoring program, his world changed. He is now an avid reader, a national advocate for literacy, and a new member of his local school board.
