Overdrive logo“Ummm… thanks?”

If this is what you said when you received a Barnes and Noble Nook for Christmas, then this is the post for you!   First, what is a Nook?  It is a device mainly used to read eBooks.  For all of the details about the Nook, go to the Barnes and Noble website

So now you’re probably wondering, how do I get eBooks on this thing?  Luckily it is not too hard to do.   The library’s OverDrive catalog has a large variety of fiction and non-fiction reads for both adults and children.

  • Once you are at the catalog, you will need to download Adobe Digital Editions to a laptop or personal computer.  After doing that, select the books you’d like to read (the Nook can read PDF and EPUB documents), add them to your bookbag, and check them out.
  • You will then download them into the Adobe Digital Editions software.
  • Lastly, connect your Nook to your laptop/PC and just like working with iTunes, the device will show up on the Adobe program and you just drag and drop the books to your Nook.  And now you have reads for 3 weeks!   Happy Reading!

For more information about how to use OverDrive, the help page is extremely useful.

(Please note, this information is for the original Nook, not the Nook color.  This post is only about the Nook because the author uses one; other devices for reading eBooks are also awesome to use with OverDrive!)

Comments from our readers...

Thanks

I received a nook tablet for Christmas and was anxious to try downloading ebooks. Your instructions were very helpful. Thanks.

Do we need an adobe activation of nook to transfer files?

Hello, 1. Adobe Digital Edition help says: You will be able to transfer Adobe eBooks to supported eBook devices activated with the same Adobe ID. 2. Whereas Nook needs to be registered with a BN.com account (which has nothing to do with the Adobe ID) So, what are the prerequisites that you had before you could transfer ebooks downloaded from the SJPL? Only #2 or both #1 and #2? Thanks.

I just got a Kindle, can I download e-books the same way?

I just got a Kindle, can I download e-books the same way as described for the Nook? Thanks, Wendy

EPUB For kindle

It is possible to read EPUB and PDF files on a Kindle. PDF Files are horrible to read as PDF and I wouldn't recommend it, but if you are looking to read any book in EPUB, PDF, TXT, DOC, etc. format just take the book and run it through this EPUB to MOBI converter (mobi is the best format for reading on a kindle) http://www.2epub.com/ Input formats: doc, docx, epub, fb2, html, lit, lrf, mobi, odt, pdb, pdf, prc, rtf, txt. Output formats: epub, fb2, lit, lrf, mobi For Kindle use MOBI!

No on the Kindle

Unfortunately, because the Kindle can't read Adobe EPUB or PDF files, you won't be able to download books from Overdrive.  Amazon does have some free eBooks you can download to your device, most of them are classics or limited time promotional books.  There is also a list of links to other ways to access free books.  Hope this helps!

This is similar for the Sony Readers

Hello, The Sony Readers also let you borrow from the library. Some people might want to know how to download to these devices as well. The steps for downloading onto the Sony Readers are similar: (1) Download the software from http://ebookstore.sony.com in the upper right hand corner (2) Go to the "Library Finder" link in "Featured Links" which will direct you to Overdrive. (3) Access the Overdrive website with your library card. (4) When you download, Overdrive will automatically open your Sony Reader browser. (5) Drag-and-drop downloaded material into your reader.

Thank you!

Thank you for the tips on the Sony Reader!  I think it's awesome you can just download the books straight to the device.  I ended up getting a Nook Color a few weeks ago and even though it has many more features than the original Nook, I still have to sync it with my computer at home and transfer the file/book.  It's still a great device to have.  Thanks again!

Sony Readers download to computers too

Sony Reader's also have to be connected to your computer (the 5" and 6" versions). When I said you go and download the software and the books, I meant to the computer. After downloading books to the Reader program, you drag-and-drop to your USB-connected reader. Sorry about the confusion. Though... the 7" PRS-950 has wireless, but I don't know if that model allows you to connect to Overdrive.

Notes from a Nook

I got a Color Nook for Christmas -- followed the instructions above which seem straight forward and downloaded an eBook. If you haven't done an Overdrive download before it may be difficult. Be patient. Read over the instructions several times and print them out or otherwise keep them handy when you're starting to download. Overdrive has some good tutorials so you may want to look at them first.
